Determining the Size of Your Rug Under a Coffee Table
Sometimes it can be a bit of a challenge to decide on just the right size of rug under a coffee table. You want it to be big enough to make a style statement, yet small enough that it doesn’t end up taking over the whole room. Here are some tips to help you make the right choice:
Size Variations
- Square Coffee Table: A small 4 x 4 or 5 x 5 foot rug works best.
- Rectangular Coffee Table: Consider a 6 x 9 or 8 x 10 foot rug.
- Oval Coffee Table: If you have an oval coffee table, look for a larger 8 x 10 or 9 x 12 rug.
Rug Style Considerations
- Color & Pattern: Choose a rug that ties into the color palette of your room, and try to pick a pattern or texture that complements your coffee table.
- Fringe vs No Fringe: If your coffee table has decorative legs or other details, a fringe border on the rug will draw attention to that area. If you have clean and simple lines, a no-fringe rug may look best.
- Durability: Choose a rug with a good-quality pile and construction so that it lasts. Higher pile rugs may look softer and more inviting, but they may not be the most practical if you have kids or pets.
Layering Options
If you want to add more texture or color to your living room, one option is to layer a small rug under your coffee table. This works great for adding visual interest, but you’ll want to look for one that’s on the smaller side–around 2 x 3 feet or smaller. Another option is to layer two large rugs of similar colors and patterns. This creates a bigger and more luxurious look, but you will need to make sure that the two rugs are balanced in size, shape and color.
Choosing the Right Rug Size
Regardless of what size or style of rug you choose, it’s important to make sure that it’s proportional to the size of your coffee table. The rug should be big enough to extend beyond the perimeter of the table, but not so much that it takes away from the overall look of the room. So when deciding on the size of rug to use under your coffee table, just remember to go big enough to make a statement, but not too big that it takes over the room.
