How Big Should a Rug be Under a Coffee Table?
Adding a rug beneath your coffee table is an excellent way to tie your living room together, but how big should it be? Here are some things to consider:
Size of the Room
When selecting a rug for beneath your coffee table, it’s important to take into account the size of the room. It’s best to make sure your rug doesn’t take up most of the floor space or it can feel cramped. For smaller rooms, a 8’ x 10’ rug is a great size.
Style of Your Room
The design of your living room should also be taken into consideration when picking a rug. If you have modern furniture, a more abstract-style rug can help the furnishings fluidly blend together. If it’s a classic or traditional setting, opt for a classic Persian or vintage-style rug.
Furniture Placement
Where you place your furniture will also play a role in selecting the ideal rug size. In general, there are three rug layout options to consider:
- Partial: The rug is placed beneath the front half of the coffee table.
- Seating Area: All of the furniture including the coffee table is placed completely on the rug.
- Floating: The rug is placed beneath the coffee table but doesn’t extend beyond it.
For the partial option, your rug should be at least 8’ x 10’. The seating area requires a larger size, like a 9’ x 12’ or 10’ x 13’, and the floating option is a bit more flexible, but should still be at least 8’ x 10’.
Size of the Coffee Table
The size of your coffee table also matters. If you have a small table, go for a larger rug. For large coffee tables, it’s best to choose a smaller rug size.
Finding the right size rug for beneath your coffee table can be tricky, but by taking into account the size of the room, style, furniture placement and coffee table size, you should be able to find the perfect fit!
