Coffee County
Coffee County is located in the state of Tennessee in the United States of America. It is named for John Coffee, a military officer in the War of 1812 who served as an Indian agent. Coffee County is bordered by Franklin County to the east, Bedford County to the south, and Grundy County to the west. The county seat is Manchester, which is also the largest city in Coffee County.
History
Coffee County was formed in 1836 from parts of Bedford and Warren counties. The county was named in honor of John Coffee, a soldier, politician and a mentor of Andrew Jackson who served in the War of 1812. During the Civil War, a number of battles were fought in the county and Manchester was the site of the Battle of England Hill.
Demographics
According to the 2010 United States Census, Coffee County is home to 52,796 people. The racial makeup of the county is 82.1% White, 14.7% African American, 1.2% Latino, 1.2% Asian and 0.9% Native American. The median household income for the county is $36,535.
